On 16th May 2018, Dr. Honan was honoured with a civic reception by the Municipal Mayor of Limerick, Councilor Seán Lynch, in recognition of her outstanding research on Modern English Literature. Her focus area interrogated the subject of child deportation under Nazism. More generally her citation noted her research on peace and reconciliation, that along with the subject of deportation are issues that are becoming even more pertinent in our current international political climate. Mary was nominated for this accolade by Dr. Michael Casey, a board member of the British & Irish Trading Alliance, and the nomination came under BITA’s programme on Education, Research, Innovation & Culture, the acronym of which is ERIC and headed up by Dr. Casey.
The event was attended by representatives of Limerick Chamber of Commerce and many members of the local business community. Also in attendance were the management team of Global Broadcasting Ireland, and representatives from both Comhairle na Mumhan and An Cóimisiún le Rinci Gaelacha.
